NABIE is a non-profit, professional society which accepts as members only state-registered Professional Engineers specializing in the practice of building inspections. The purpose of NABIE is to lead and advance the integrity, value and understanding of the practice of professional engineering as it applies to the inspection, investigation and evaluation of buildings and homes. In 1990, NABIE became an affinity group of the 70,000 member National Society of Professional Engineers.

The American Association of Home Inspectors Inc. is a professional membership organization of "Certified Home Inspectors" nationwide. AAHI was organized in 1989 by the American Institute of Home Inspectors, who has been training home inspectors since 1981. AAHI is the only National Association that certifies Home Inspectors using a Certification Mark granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (Reg. No. 1,662,100) in 1991. The Certification Mark is to be used to certify certain person or persons that have met the education and/or experience criteria as set forth by AAHI. Current members of AAHI are granted the right to use this Registered Certification Mark. AAHI has members in 48 states, Canada and Puerto Rico.

FREA was founded in 1992 in response to changes in the appraisal industry resulting from Title XI of the Financial Institutions Reform Enforcement Act of 1989 (FIRREA). The Directors of FREA, appraisers themselves, believed the time was right for a professional organization which offered appraisers a package of benefits and education as its primary goal. The National Institute of Building Inspectors (NIBI) was formed in 1987 to provide professional training and certification for the home inspection industry. NIBI is recognized as one of the oldest and most experienced training institutes in the industry. It has developed an enviable reputation for raising inspection standards and providing assistance to consumers and real estate professionals in the selection of impartial, competent and insured inspectors. NIBI Certified Inspectors are required to not only complete an extensive training course and field work, but must also participate in a yearly re-certification program.
